Memorial Day Wreaths

Updated on June 25, 2014

MEMORIAL DAY FORMERLY KNOWN AS DECORATION DAY

In 1866 the country was recovering from the long and horrific Civil War. As soldiers returned home, some maimed, with their stories of the War, Henry Walles in Waterloo, New York had an idea. Henry wanted all businesses to close for the day to honor the Civil War soldiers that didn't come home. On May 5th, the shops closed and flowers, wreaths and crosses were placed on the graves of the Northern soldiers. Around this same time, a retired Major General Logan planned a ceremony for the soldiers that survived the War. General Logan led the soldiers to the cemetery to decorate the fallen soldiers' graves with flags. This was a memorial to their comrades. The day became known as Decoration Day.

The name was changed to Memorial Day in 1882. It became a day to honor fallen soldiers both from past and recent wars. In 1971, President Nixon declared Memorial Day a federal holiday. Over time, Memorial Day has become a day to remember not only military Americans but a day to honor all loved ones who have died.

Unfortunately, through the years, it has lost its true meaning. Most Americans wait for Memorial Day as another three day break from work. We all need to stop and reflect on the thousands of military lives lost to keep us free. Take some time this Memorial Day to place a wreath or flowers or flags on the grave site of a fallen soldier.

HONOR OUR SERVICE PERSONNEL EVERY DAY

Our armed forces are on duty 365 days - 24 hours a day - why do we need to wait for one special day to honor them? Let's give them the respect and encouragement they need to continue to protect our freedom.

TIPS FOR MAKING A WREATH

REMEMBER THE FALLEN WITH A WREATH

Wreaths are commonly used during Memorial Day celebrations. The circular shape of the wreath symbolizes eternity and immortality. Flowers often decorate the wreaths with patriotic colors. Ribbons of red, white and blue as well as flags frequently adorn wreaths. Regardless of the decorations on the wreath, this is a day that should honor the memories of the fallen soldiers. We know that so many have given their lives through the years in various wars. Taking a little time out of busy schedules for this remembrance is nothing compared to the ultimate sacrifice made by the soldiers resting in the cemeteries. There will still be plenty of time for a picnic or cook-out.
